80 million years in the trees

About this project

The only reason we have such dextrous hands and whirling arms is that our ancestors had spent 80 million years or so (so some zoologists calculate) in the trees.

Colin Tudge, “The Secret Life of Trees” (2005) p. 5

This project is an evocation of the universe of trees.

The video footage is from my personal collection that I have amassed over four years.

The images are complemented by quotes from the Buddha from the Salayatana Samyutta 35.82, the Lokapanha Sutta or, ‘A question about the world’.

The abstract images were programmed by Joseph Denavas

A unique image is generated every 12 sec in the installation.

12 sec is the maximum time between two consecutive thoughts in a person in deep meditation.

The abstract image consists of 2000 elements and requires 800,000 calculations.
